Questioning

These prompts can be used as a pre- or post-assessment to determine if students are able to generate questions with answers in the text.  The "I wonder..." prompt is intended to assess whether students engage in text with a questioning mindset.


Making Inferences

Making Text-Based Inferences  Present this passage and ask students to fill in the blank to answer the question, "What was the roar in the woods?"

Making Text-Based Inferences  Present this passage and ask students to answer the following question on the back of the sheet:  "Explain how the eagle saved the peasant's life."


Inferring with Dialogue

Inferring in Dialogue  Present this passage and ask students to fill in the blanks to indicate who is speaking in each underlined section of dialogue.

Inferring Traits from Dialogue  Using a brief dialogue, students are asked to infer who is speaking and note what the characters are like based on their words.

Inferring Traits in Text  Students are asked to identify traits/feelings and evidence.  This can be used with any piece of narrative text.
